Moving In and Registering[]
Incoming JETs and JETs who are moving within Tokyo will need to register their address at their local government office within two weeks of finding an apartment. (See the link above to find your local office.)
Go to your office and explain that you need to file a Notification of Moving-in (転入届, tennyu todoke), and/or indicate the blank back side of your Residence Card.
転入届を頂きたいです。
tennyu todoke wo itadakitaidesu.
I would like to get the “Notification of Moving-in” form.
You will need:
- Your Residence Card (在留カード, zairyuu kaado)
- the address of your new apartment
- the date you will move in
- There may be some minor conflict if you try to register before actually moving in, as most JETs will. If you are concerned, put the date you register as your move-in date.
- The office will likely also ask about your Health Insurance. Explain that you will receive your Health Insurance card from your employer later. (Or present it if you already have received it from your school.)
- If you are moving from another place in Japan, you will also need a Notification of Moving-out (転出届, tenshyutsu todoke) from your previous ward office.
At the end of the process, the office will print your address on the back of your Residence Card (see below) and file your residence.

Moving Out[]
When you leave Japan or move within the country, you will need to file this with your municipal office up to two weeks prior to moving out. You can check your municipal office's website to see if they have a mail in option.
Go to your office and explain that you need to file a Notification of Moving-out (転出届, tenshyutsu todoke). Fill it out and submit it at the there.

You will need:

- the date you will move out (転出予定日, tenshutsu yoteibi)
