Description[]
A couple of my JTEs and I use Picture Talk to get the students to preview / review their reading comprehension lessons. The goal is to get them to think more about the content and their ability to relay information in English rather than relying on rote memorization and translation of the text.
Materials[]
- Reading comprehension textbook
- Photos, lots of photos that represent the key points of the text
- PowerPoint and/or large printed copies of the photos
Procedure[]
- Prepare your visuals
- Read through the text finding the key words and main ideas
- Use an online image search to find visual representations of the key words/ideas
- Print your photos and/or put them in a PowerPoint presentation
- Split the passage into even parts
- Have the students make pairs
- Show the pictures for the first part
- Try to animate the photos in such a way that helps students recall the story
- Have Student A explain as much as they can about the first part of the story using your pictures for hints
- Do not allow students to read directly from the text
- Instead, encourage them to use their own words and simplify the English
- Choose a student to come to the front of the class and present their summary using your photos/PPT as if they were the teacher
- And/or the JET teacher can give a good example of a summary
- Show the pictures for the second part and have Student B explain
- Repeat for the remaining parts, alternating between Students A and B
Variations[]
- For a challenge: Do this before the students have read the text. Have them look at the pictures and guess what will be said in each part.
- For a challenge: After having gone through the story and photos together, display only one picture from the story and have students explain as much as they can about the photo to their partner for 30 seconds or 1 minute.
- For an easier time: Make it into a "repeat after me" activity. Write a summary of the text in simpler English. Then use the photos as visual cues while you present the summary. Have the students repeat each phrase/sentence after you to practice pronunciation and fluency. Then have students repeat parts of the summary to their partner and/or choose various students to come to the front to repeat the summary as if they were the teacher.
