Description[]
Introduce the concept of New Year's Resolutions and draw comparisons to the Japanese traditions of kakizome and hatsumode. Then, have students write their own resolutions and exchange them with a classmate to give advice using the subjunctive mood. Provide a few of your own resolutions as examples, using humor where possible. Optionally, include information on what sort of resolutions are most often made in your home country.
Materials[]
- Worksheet provided
Procedure[]
- Give students several minutes to write down to broad resolutions they have for the new year
- Have students exchange papers with a partner and spend 5-10 minutes writing down 2-3 pieces of advice for each other's goals using the subjunctive mood.
- Collect the papers and anonymously share some of the resolutions and ask the class for advice
Variations[]
- A spokenversion of this activity could be possible, but the potentially personal nature of resolutions may make it difficult for students to share these aloud
