Description[]

"Never Have I Ever" is a fun way to practice one use of the present perfect tense (pronoun + to be + past participle) in the negative form (I have never ~). Students must state aloud an experience that they personally have never had, but that their classmates are likely to have had in order to eliminate one another until there is only one person left standing.

Materials[]

  • Hands

Procedure[]

  1. Have all students stand at their seats
  2. Determine the number of "lives" everyone starts with; use fingers to keep track
  3. Choose a student to start off the game with a statement
  4. Any players who have had the stated experience must then lower a finger or "lose a life"
  5. Have the next student in line come up with the next statement
  6. When a player has no lives remaining, they must sit down
  7. The game ends when only one player is left

Variations[]

  • Depending on the amount of time left in the period, you can adjust the number of lifes that each person has. Since the number of lives remaining is usually counted using one's fingers, 10 is usually the upper limit.
  • Some may argue that teaching the inverted phrasing "Never have I ever" is unnecessarily confusing to students who are new to the grammar point, so feel free to simply use "I have never (ever)..." instead
