What is JALT?
JALT (The Japan Association for Language Teaching) is a nonprofit organization comprised of language teachers from all levels of academia. JALT promotes excellence in language learning, teaching, and research by providing opportunities for those involved in language education to meet, share, and collaborate. Their organization holds professional development seminars, releases periodical scholarly journals, and gives out research grants to other language teachers in Japan. JALT has many chapters and partnerships internationally and domestically. The Tokyo chapter of JALT wants to establish a partnership with current Tokyo JETs.
What does JALT want from Tokyo JETs?
Just young participants. JALT is looking for JETs to take part in some of the seminars and events that JALT is offering within Tokyo prefecture. Most of these seminars are conducted by university professors and private ALTs, but they feel like with the influx of JETs here in Tokyo, they want to learn from our teaching experiences as well.
What are they offering?
JALT wants to offer JETs a discounted 1500 yen membership fee (standard membership 3000 yen) to participate in the Tokyo chapter of JALT. You can attend all of their Tokyo chapter sponsored events for free if you are a member (1000 yen per event for non-members).
You may have the opportunity to publish in their Tokyo academic journal, with the potential to receive grants up to 50,000 yen. If you are published within the national academic journals, you may receive international recognition which could progress your professional development.

We have a great line up this time, starting with a presentation by Professor Mitsue Allen-Tamai of Aoyama University who will talk about her unique storytelling project. A discussion on assessment and testing at the elementary level will follow. Finally, Professor Frances Shiobara of Kobe Shoin Women's University will share her research on team teaching, a topic relevant for Younger Learner teachers at all levels.
